About

The Faculty of the Humanities offers BA degrees that are built around a specific core (majors), with relevant minor and elective subjects. During the registration and orientation week at the beginning of your first year, the programme directors will explain the curriculum structures and clarify uncertainties.

The Faculty of the Humanities include many academic departments and modules that include disciplines like Languages, Arts, Human Sciences, Social Sciences, and Cultural Sciences. Due to this variety, you can compile a degree programme that suits your career choice, interest, and skill. Some programmes were developed to train you for a specific career, while others equip you with the skills needed in various positions. Today’s ever-changing career world requires various skills that this faculty can equip you with, including: language proficiency, communication skills, creativity, interpersonal skills, problem-solving skills, computer literacy and critical thinking.

Academic plan 1: Majoring in Languages

A qualification in languages is aimed at fluency and a good understanding of the language’s cultural context. With the more ancient languages, we focus on interpretation and translation. Generally, language studies emphasise the ability to convey messages that are grammatically sound, purposeful, and persuasive. A language qualification opens doors to the publishing world like organised media, creative writing for a publication, or for corporate communication. Languages, of which you must choose two, include: Afrikaans and Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Latin, Sesotho (mother tongue), South African Sign Language.

Academic plan 2: Majoring in Classical Studies and Philosophy

This type of qualification challenges you to think creatively and critically about your world. We will introduce you to the origins of ideas, meaning, and theories that drive a modern society. Issues driving modern society include logo therapy, feminism, stereotyping, and ethnic identity. Many of the most innovative and economically successful people in the world of today have qualifications in Philosophy.

Academic plan 3: Majoring in Liberal Arts and a language

A Liberal Arts qualification gives you a multi-disciplinary view of the world, and the ability to integrate different perspectives. It will help you to understanding the past, and how the past has shaped and built the individuals and communities of today. A major in a language advances your understanding of how individuals and communities are given a voice in the complexity of the modern world. This type of qualification supports careers in general management and team building.

Academic plan 4: Majoring in Liberal Arts

This academic plan develops the skills you need to become a contributing member of society. You will learn how to exercise informed analysis, judgement, and creative critique, grasp the role that language plays in supporting or changing the status quo, and gain insight into how to build a future from a divided past. This qualification opens doors into heritage and tourism careers, careers in the many branches of the public services, as well as occupations such as art critics, journalists, and ethnographic researchers. A combination of History and a language in this academic plan would allow you to graduate into the teaching profession, as both of these are teaching subjects.

Academic plan 5: Majoring in Linguistics and a Language

Linguistics is the scientific study of how language evolved and how the structure of languages varies, influencing the way in which people interact and create understanding. Typically, this programme opens doors to translation and interpretation careers. You will have opportunities to develop education and training material for different audiences, teach languages, and assist in the development of communication material for various industries. If you are interested in this academic plan, you might also be interested in the BA (Language Practice) programme which specialises in translation and interpretation skills.

Academic plan 6: Majoring in Geography and Social Science

Interested in the environment and the preservation of our ecological future, but can’t get into a BSc? This is the academic plan for you. This programme specialises in Geography and Environmental Management but includes the necessary social science modules to create an understanding of environmental management’s social issues. To qualify for this academic plan you must have 50% for Mathematics. Mathematical Literacy is not sufficient, even if you get good marks.

Social Sciences, of which you must choose one, include: Anthropology, Political Science, Sociology, Communication Science.

Academic Plan 7: Majoring in Communication Science and Psychology

A very popular choice, because Communication Science and Psychology opens a world of coaching and mentoring careers, as well as careers for communication specialists. You will also be able to enter the publishing world, from being involved in the world of organised media, to creative writing for publication or for corporate communication. This combination of subjects, with an appropriate postgraduate qualification, can also be a springboard for a career in Human Resource Management.

Academic Plan 8: Majoring in Political Science and Philosophy

Political studies explains how power operates through government institutions, while philosophy gives insight into making moral decisions. The minor in Economics further offers an understanding of economics’ role in driving both political and moral decisions. Most graduates with this combination of subjects find themselves in banking and finances, politics, business management, management consultancy, and the many branches of public service. To qualify for this academic plan, you must have at least 50% for Mathematics. Mathematical Literacy will not be sufficient, even if you get good marks.

Academic Plan 9: Majoring in Psychology and a Language

This plan has been developed to accommodate students who wish to teach a language, and would like to couple it with the teaching of the subject Life Orientation. The combination of subjects would also serve as a springboard into the world of publishing and editing and would also provide a basis for careers in general management, team building, coaching and mentoring.

ADMISSION

Important information:

  • Higher Education South Africa (HESA) set specific admission requirements that you must meet if you want to study at any South African university. If you finished school in or after 2008, and have a National Senior Certificate (NSC), you need the following to apply for admission to a Bachelor’s Degree at any South African university:
    • Four (4) of the seven (7) subjects included in your NSC subject package, must be from the designated subject list.
    • Achieve a performance level of at least 4 (50%) in each of these four (4) subjects
  • All admission requirements apply to first year students in 2018.
  • Admission to study at the UFS is dependent on the following:
    • Your application meets all the minimum requirements for the programme
    • The programme must have available space and capacity to admit students
    • You have to submit valid school results with your application
  • The UFS reserves to right to change the minimum requirements of each programme without notifying you.
  • Applications for all non-selection programmes close on 29 September 2017.

An admission point (AP) consisting of seven levels is used. Points will be awarded for six academic modules.
Note: No points will be awarded for achievement levels lower than 30%:
