Applications for Vaal University of Technology VUT will close at the end of September ( 30th September ) for South African applicants and at the end of October ( 30th October ) for international applicants.

NB: In the case of applications submitted by mail, payments will be accepted by bank deposit only. Use your ID number as the reference. Postal orders or bank guaranteed cheques must be made out to the Vaal University of Technology. No cash should accompany your application form.

Vaal University of Technology VUT Undergraduate Admission Requirements

General Admission Requirements.

The minimum entrance requirements for admission to studies at the Vaal University of Technology is a Senior Certificate or equivalent qualification. A pass mark is required in at least one of the languages of instruction (English) of the University at Higher Grade (HG) or Standard Grade (SG).

If an applicant offers an N3 qualification as an entrance requirement, it should comprise at least four subjects, plus pass marks in two official languages (of which one must be English), at least at Senior Certificate level (SG).

Additional requirements are specified for each course/ instructional programme. Prospective students must please note that in the faculties of Engineering, Applied and Computer Sciences the minimum required symbol for Mathematics, Physical Science, and in certain cases English, are HG (E) or SG(C).

In the other Faculties and pending the course you want to enroll for, the average recommended subjects are: Accounting, Business Economics, Economics, Mathematics, Typing, Biology, Home Economics, Art, Physical Science, Clothing and Needlework.

Degree courses: Admission requirements regarding post diploma and degree studies are available on request.

All applications will be selected on merit by the department concerned. A candidate who is at least 23 years of age may apply for conditional admission.

The Candidate’s application must be accompanied by the following:

  • Certificate stating formal qualifications.
  • Recommendation from the applicant’s employer stating that he/she has the necessary experience and communication abilities to complete the proposed instructional programme successfully.
  • If an application is conditionally approved, the candidate shall only be admitted to the second semester/year of study, provided that the full first year/semester course has been completed successfully.

VUT Research Postgraduate Admission Requirements

The postgraduate admission requirements for a degree at the Vaal University of Technology Research differ according to whether a student will be doing a Masters or Doctorate course, and then according to which faculty the course will fall under.



To be eligible for consideration for admission to the M-Tech, the applicant must possess a B-Tech degree or an Honours degree with an average pass percentage of 60% from a recognized university or another tertiary institution. A course in Research Methodology must be completed or other evidence of research ability must be provided. In some disciplines, further research training or the completion of a preliminary coursework program in research preparation may be required.

These are the following admission requirements for an M-Tech qualification in each of the faculties:

Engineering:

  • Relevant B-Tech or equivalent
  • Research Methodology course completed
  • Average pass percentage of 60%

Applied & Computer Sciences:

  • Relevant B-Tech or 4-year degree approved by SAQA
  • Research Methodology course completed
  • Average pass percentage of 60%

Management Sciences:

  • Relevant B-Tech or 4-year degree approved by SAQA
  • Research Methodology course completed
  • Average pass percentage of 65%

Humanities:

  • Relevant B-Tech or 4-year degree approved by SAQA
  • Research Methodology course completed
  • Average pass percentage of 65%

In addition to academic qualifications, the following postgraduate admission requirements also need to be satisfied before a recommendation for admission can be made:

  • The proposed topic must be appropriate for higher degree research and it must be consistent with the academic aims and objectives of the student.

  • The student must have access to the necessary resources, facilities and the necessary budget in order to complete the degree within the timeframe.

  • There must be a qualified staff member holding confirmed, continuous or fixed-term appointments of sufficient length for the purposes of supervision of the proposed research and student.

  • The proposed program of work must be able to be completed within the maximum period of submission for the degree.

  • A suitable level of contact with the university supervisors must be maintained.

  • Where the applicant is currently employed, capacity to meet the timelines and other requirements must be considered.

  • The proposed research cannot reproduce research that has previously been submitted for the award of a degree or diploma.

  • Where the intellectual property rights of the applicant may be a consideration, a suitable agreement protecting the rights of the student needs to be signed. If the student is unwilling to sign an agreement, the research proposal may not be approved and the student may be required to choose another topic in an area that is not commercially sensitive.

  • The applicant should have no outstanding financial obligation with the University and in the case of international applicants, they should be able to verify the necessary financial capacity to undertake the program.

  • The applicant must possess sufficient English language proficiency.
