What is an Auxiliary Nurse?

Auxiliary Nurses carry out basic nursing procedures and take care of patients on a less specialized level under the supervision of a registered nurse.

An Auxiliary Nurse must be registered with the South African Nursing Council.

What does an Auxiliary Nurse do?

• takes care of the ill and weak
• assists nurses and doctors
• makes sure patients are comfortable
• feeds patients
• makes beds
• takes temperatures, pulses, blood pressure and weigh patients
• puts patients at ease
• helps with putting on new bandages etc
• works in hospitals, clinics, health care centres and old aged homes
• works as basic home-care nurses

How do I become an Auxiliary Nurse?

You will need to complete a Higher Certificate: Auxiliary Nursing

This is an entry-level qualification into nursing.

It will provide you with the basic knowledge, affective tools and practical techniques for additional higher education studies in nursing. With this qualification you may be accepted to do a National Diploma in Nursing.

Higher Certificate: Auxiliary Nursing 

• Minimum Requirements:

• Grade 12/NSC or … Successfully completed a Level 4 health related qualification

• Communication Skills at NQF Level 4
• Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4
• Computer Literacy at NQF Level 3
• Life Science at NQF level 4

WARNING

There are a lot of illegal nursing institutions operating in South Africa.

It is very important to make sure that the institution is approved by the Nursing Council AND that the training programme (course) is approved by the Nursing Council.

If not, the Nursing Council will not recognise the training. This means that the student will not be able to practice in South Africa (or elsewhere) after completing the training.  All the time and money will be wasted.
