Vhembe TVET College was established in 1963 under the name Bantu State School. Today the college has six campuses; Makwarela Campus, Tshisimani Campus, Mashamba Campus, Mavhoi Campus, Thengwe Satelite Campus and Makhado Satellite Campus and is known as Vhembe TVET College.

WHO WE ARE
Vhembe TVET College was established in 1963 under the name Bantu State School. In 1967 the school was then named Bantu Trade School due to its diversity.
In 1985 the school was renamed to Finyazwanda College until 1992 when it was renamed Technical College of Venda (Techniven) until 2003. In 2003 we became known as Vhembe FET College until 2014.
Today the college has six campuses; Makwarela Campus, Tshisimani Campus, Mashamba Campus, Mavhoi Campus, Thengwe Satelite Campus and Makhado Satellite Campus and is known as Vhembe TVET College.

Vhembe College Background
Vhembe TVET College is located in the Vhembe District Municipality, which is far north of the Limpopo Province. The District is comprised of four municipalities, namely, Thulamela, Makhado, Mutale and Musina, with the seat located in Thohoyandou. It covers 21000 square kilometres or 18% of the province. The college has six campuses which are Makwarela, Tshisimani, Mashamba, Mavhoi, Thengwe and Makhado. The Central Office of Vhembe TVET College is situated in Sibasa about 2km from Makwarela Campus, 52km from Mavhoi, 72km from Mashamba and 31km from Tshisimani campus. The college has a satellite campus at Thengwe that specialises with learnerships and short skills and a hospitality campus at Makhado.
The economic activity in the area is very low, characterized by small enterprises, e.g. agricultural activities, car servicing and welding among the rural settlement. Unemployment and poverty are tremendous problems. The unemployment rate is incredibly high, much more than the provincial average. There is high shortage of infrastructure and big industries.
The main drivers of the local economy are farming, tourism & hospitality, services industry, informal sectors, mining sector and transport. The college plans to contribute in the growth of the economy by encouraging small enterprises, partnering with industries in and out the province for the purposes of placement and skills development. The college has relationships with Municipalities, Universities, Local Government Departments, Small Medium and Micro Enterprises and traditional authorities. The college also has linkages with Correctional Services, Provincial Department of Education, Department of Health, Economic Development and Tourism, Madzivhandila Agricultural College, Eskom, National Department of Justice and Expanded Public Works Programme.
Vhembe College Strategic Plan
The college has developed the following strategic plan in consultation with DHET, Vhembe District and Local Municipalities, college staff and students. These strategic goals are in alignment with the national strategic goals of the Department of Higher Education and Training.
Strategic Goal 1
Increase the number of skilled youth by expanding access to education and training for the youth.
The college intends to increase the number to 35 003 in 2019. Infrastructure will be upgraded and new classrooms / workshops will be built. The college will also install modern equipment. The College remains in need of the basic infrastructural requirement given the high risk identified towards addressing access. In the face of the present economic status, a high proportion of students drawn from the catchment area are anticipated to require financial assistance with enrolment fees. There is an increased demand on scarce resources such as water. The Vhembe Region has poor road infrastructure that limits access. The college curriculum reflects a revised and updated Programme and Qualifications Mix (PQM).
Strategic Goal 2
Adequately capacitated individual institutions for effective provision or facilitation of learning.
The college will train lecturing staff in teaching and assessment methodologies. The lecturing staff will get workplace exposure. In order to support the teaching staff, the administrative and support staff will also be trained in their areas of responsibility. College policies will be reviewed and implemented that will adequately support the staff. The college intends to also incorporate innovative teaching and learning methodologies, e.g. e-learning in order to improve results. Vhembe region has a limited number of industries for students’ workplace exposure during the qualification. The college plans to extend partnerships to outside provinces.
Strategic Goal 3
Increase the number of students successfully entering the labour market upon completion of training.
The college will form strong and on-going relationships with employers in the local, provincial and national industries engaging with them in the assessment of quality of the college training. The feedback from the employers will then assist the college in adapting the training to reflect technological changes in the workplace environment. The college, on the other hand, will offer training opportunities to up skill local employers’ staff.
Strategic Goal 4
A college curriculum that is responsive to the demands of the market place and can transform and adapt quickly and effectively to changing skills needs, with a special emphasis on artisan training. The college intends to purchase modern (up-to-date) and relevant equipment.Lecturers will be trained on technical skills and exposed to the latest developments and trends. The number of learnerships, skills programmes and artisanal programmes will be increased. A satellite campus is established specifically for these programmes. The college will in this MTEF period focus on improving pass/throughput rate, certification rate and lower drop out rate.

INTRODUCTION
Vhembe TVET College is one of the fifty public TVET colleges, mandated by government to proactively assist the government in addressing the triple challenges that have the potential of crippling the economy. The triple challenges namely are -: Poverty, Unemployment and inequality. This effort to alleviate the scourge of these challenges is believed to be through education and training, and Vhembe TVET College is uniquely positioned to address the scourge.
The government have spent a huge amount of money researching and finding out which courses would be responsive to the demographics of South Africa and bridge the skills gap that exist in the country. A number of engineering course and business courses were identified and subsequently the Higher Education Council endorsed the courses identified. All public TVET colleges have two programmes namely -: NCV (National Certificate Vocational) and NATED (National Technical Education Diploma).
STRATEGIC BENEFIT OF STUDYING THROUGH A TVET COLLEGE
There is a misconception that exists within the minds of many people. Most still think that TVET colleges are for the academically challenged. Which is absolutely not true. This TVET model worked in reviving the German economy post world war II. TVET college is the best way to fast track one’s career as opposed to other conventional way of furthering studies post grade 12. In the other programme (NVC) it prepares learners at an early age, see the table below -:
LEANER A (TVET College)
- He/She starts at Level 2- Will be studying Electrical Infrastructure Construction
- He/She progresses to Level 3
- He/She progresses to Level 4
- Every level the learner passes we issue them with a certificate
LEANER B (Conventional Schooling)
- He/She will be in Grade 10- Will be studying Caps curriculum
- He/She progress to Grade 11
- He/She progresses to Grade 12
- Each grade they pass they get a report
The above compares the two learners. The one at an TVET will be studying exactly what the industry is looking for and the one in conventional schooling will be studying generic curriculum which is not necessarily responsive to the industry. After both of them finishes their studies should a Job opportunity arises, the one who stands a better chance of getting employment, is the one who have studied through an TVET because he/she would have studied what would be relevant to the industry.
The same happens in a case where they both want to pursue the same course at a university or university of technology. There one who will have difficulty in their first year of tertiary will be the one who is from grade 12.
Bursaries Offers in Vhembe College
Our Bursary is administered by NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme). This bursary cannot be applied for by external student. Those who are eligible for this bursary must be student of the college already.
Immediately after registration, students are given the bursary form which they must complete in full and attach all the supporting documents that will be required in accordance to the information the applicant would have declared. The bursary pays for -:
