Sundry bursaries

The university has various bursaries available for general or specific fields of study, or in specific departments and faculties. Applications for these bursaries close on 17 September (seniors) and 31 October (first-years).

SECTION (I)
Bursaries in this section are awarded automatically in view of academic merit and students do not have to apply for such bursaries. No service obligations are attached to any of the bursaries described in this section.

SECTION (II) On allocating bursaries in this section, the financial position of the parent/guardian as well as academic performance are taken into account. All students who apply for financial support at the UFS are considered automatically for these bursaries, and they should therefore complete the usual application form for financial support before 17 September (seniors) and 31 October (first-years). These bursaries need not be specified.



SECTION (III) Students must apply for bursaries in this section before 15 December each year. Separate application forms should be completed, taking into consideration certain conditions. Application forms are available from: The Deputy Director, Student Financial Aid, UFS, PO Box 339, Bloemfontein 9300.

Description and conditions

The bursary is only available to needy descendants of the late Chief Commandant IS Ferreira, in life from De Stadesfontein, Ladybrand district.

Only students from the Northern Cape region will be considered for the bursary.

A student must apply in writing on the recommendation of the head of the department. The closing date is 15 October every year.

The bursary is available to honours, master’s, and doctoral study and also HED (Postgraduate).

Former pupils of the Model High and Primary School will be given preference, and secondly, pupils from the city of Bloemfontein can be considered for these bursaries.

The bursary is awarded to a full-time enrolled postgraduate Law student at the University of the Free State.

Preference will be given to descendants of the late Mr Havenga’s brothers and sisters, and thereafter to descendants of the sister of his former wife, the late Anna Catharina Petronella Havenga (born Noeth) in the following order:

Students must apply in writing on the recommendation of the Dean of Students. Application forms are available at the Dean of Students: Kovsie Support Services, UFS, PO Box 339, Bloemfontein 9300.

Descendants of the late PJJ and FJ du Preez qualify for these bursaries.

Applicants must be children of members of the association.

This fund was a grant, made by the late Mr TC Visser and his wife, Mrs RC Visser. The interest is used annually under the following conditions:

  • Applicants must be related to the donor and his wife.
  • The financial position of the trust beneficiary will be considered.
  • Bursaries are available for undergraduate or postgraduate studies, for full-time or part-time studies.
  • Students who attended one of the following schools, may also qualify for the bursary:High Schools: Werda (Fauresmith), Jagersfontein, MT Steyn (Philippolis), Genl Hertzog (Smithfield), Louw Wepener (Wepener), Rouxville, Edenburg, Koffiefontein, Trompsburg, Christiaan de Wet (Dewetsdorp), Hendrik Potgieter (Reddersburg), Pellissier (Bethulie), Zastron.
    Primary Schools: Springfontein, Luckhoff, Goedemoed-laerskool (Aliwal-Noord), Welbedachtdam-laerskool (Wepener), Hendrik Verwoerd, Rosary-laerskool (Zastron).

    * The above-mentioned bursaries and/or fees may also be awarded for studies at any university in any other country outside the Republic of South Africa.

A bursary(ies) is awarded for the fifth or later child(ren) of the same parents studying at this university.

Bursaries are awarded under the following conditions:

  • Bursars must be students at the UFS
  • Descendants of the late WTD. Scheepers and his wife will be given preference.

The bursary is awarded on recommendation of the Department of Food Science.

Every year, the Alumni Trust makes bursaries available to deserving students who achieve academically. Preference will be given to children of alumni.
