Information sources and off-campus access to resources:
The Library subscribes to a wide range of print and electronic resources that can be identified via the Library’s website. Please make an appointment with a subject librarian for assistance with any aspect of your research: contact list.
Please click on the Guide to Finding Journal Literature for an overview of the options available. Use the subject specific guides for general and specific resources for a discipline.

The libraries contain a wide range of print research methodology books. Consult the iLink catalogue.
From off-campus you may access electronic resources by choosing the off-campus option listed under the Electronic Resources tab on the Library’s website and authenticating yourself with your LAN login and password.
Bibliographic management packages
The bibliographic management package EndNote is supported by the University. Endnote is a downloadable product for office and home pc’s. To download the software and obtain the user tutorial, click here. Open source software such as Zotero is available via the World Wide Web.
Statistical packages
The University subscribes to the packages SPSS and Nvivo. Registered students and staff members can download these from the software library. Click on Academic
Inter library loans
If a book or article is not available at UKZN, consult the Inter library loans office located in each main library, which may be able to borrow (books) or obtain a copy (articles) from another South African institution.
1. The University’s research ethics policies are available from the Research office website
2.The University’s plagiarism policy can be located at the Registrar’s website under the section Policies and Procedures. The University subscribes to the anti-plagiarism software Turnitin. Go to www.turnitin.com to register. Consult any of the ICS help desks for more information.
3. The Library has produced a number of referencing style guides reflecting various commonly used styles such as MLA, APA, Harvard (Author-Date). These are available from the Library’s website. Click on Guides to access these. Print books of style guides are also available in the libraries. Consult the iLink catalogue.
Electronic copies of theses
The University requires that all postgraduates submit one bound print copy and one electronic copy – preferably a single pdf file on CD – of their thesis to the Higher Degrees office for the Library. The Library maintains ResearchSpace, the repository of all UKZN digital theses.
