You will have to pass five Honours modules, each extending over one semester. One of these, Advanced Research Methodology (POL3107), is compulsory.
The other four must be chosen from the following list:
POL02X7 INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATION
POL03X7 KEY ISSUES IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
POL04X7 INTERNATIONAL POLITICAL ECONOMY
POL05X7 INTERNATIONAL CONFLICT
POL06X7 AREA STUDIES
POL07X7 POLITICAL RISK ANALYSIS

Please note: Not all modules are necessarily offered each year.
Aside from these options, you may also choose one module from a related discipline with the permission of the departmental chairpersons involved. This will usually be a module in the second major subject in your BA degree, e.g. Development Studies, Journalism or Economics.
Lecturers
Method of presentation:
The majority of the lectures consist of discussion classes, for which you will have to prepare assignments forming the basis of the discussion.
Lecture times:
Lecture times are flexible. Most lectures take place in the afternoon or early evening to accommodate working students. Specific times are decided on between lecturers and students.
Full-time/Part-time:
Full-time students complete their Honours studies over two semesters and part-time students over three. An honours degree demands a fair amount of time and commitment, and you are strongly advised not to be overly ambitious in the number of modules taken per semester (three is the maximum allowed).
Admission requirements
A BA degree majoring in Political Studies/Political Science/International Relations/African Studies, with an average of 65% in the Politics-oriented major for both semesters in the final year is required, as well as a written entrance assessment..
You must also meet UJ’s general admission requirements as set out in the booklet titled Faculty of Humanities Degrees and Regulations.
Examinations
Examinations are taken in June and November. All Honours scripts are also examined externally.
