About

The duties of general medical practitioners include the examination and diagnosis of patients, the prescription of medicines, performing of minor operations and provision of different treatments for injuries, diseases and other ailments. Medical practitioners (doctors) are licensed practitioners of medicine.

General practitioners diagnose and treat diseases and injuries and perform an important function in looking after the well-being of the community. Thorough knowledge of diseases and their symptoms is required for diagnoses and treatment. Medical doctors first compile clinical histories of their patients before making diagnoses. They make use of several techniques and different apparatus in the examination of patients, for example blood pressure gauges, X-rays and stethoscopes, in order to form an image of the disease or injury.



It is important that all factors be taken into consideration by general practitioners before a diagnosis is made. Treatment can be medical, surgical and therapeutic. They may prescribe medication or refer the patient to a specialist, for further diagnosis and special treatment. Selection procedure

  • All applications for admission to MBChB and BMedSc are subject to selection.
  • Due to the limited number of spaces available, only 160 candidates are admitted to the first year of study in the MBChB programme and 15 to the BMedSc (Radiation Sciences) programme.
  • All prospective students must submit their applications to the University of the Free State, together with the selection form.
  • The closing date for all MBChB and BMedSc applications to reach the Faculty of Health Sciences is 31 May 2017.
  • No late applications will be considered.
  • All prospective students for the above courses must write a National Benchmark Test (NBT). The results of this compulsory admission test will be used as an additional guideline to the selection process. More information regarding this test may be obtained from www.nbt.ac.za or 021 650 3523.

Selection method



  • Preliminary selection, of which the school average and NBT comprise the largest part, will take place as set out in the selection policy.
  • Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, language of instruction and any two other subjects with the highest marks are taken into consideration for MBChB. Life Orientation as a subject is excluded, as it is considered separately.
  • Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences (recommended only, not a prerequisite), language of instruction and any other two subjects with the highest marks will be taken into consideration for BMedSc. Life Orientation is excluded as it is considered separately.
  • English or Afrikaans as subject is compulsory.
  • A minimum achievement level 5 (60%) is required for each of the three compulsory science subjects (i.e. Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Life Sciences) to calculate the selection mark.
  • A minimum admission point (AP) of 36 is required. This is calculated based on achievement in the above six subjects together with one mark for Life Orientation above achievement level 5.
  • Extramural activities and achievements in Grade 12 are also considered.
  • Final selection is confirmed in January 2018, after the National Senior Certificate (NSC) results have been released.
  • Application forms for admission to the university, together with a fully completed selection form, must be submitted to the University of the Free State.
  • The choice of study must correspond on both forms.
  • The application form, selection form, application fee, medical report, health questionnaire, photographs, and certified copies of ID and results must reach the university simultaneously, should you apply in hard copy. Should you apply online, the selection form, application fee, medical report, health questionnaire, results, photos, and certified copies of ID must be uploaded electronically.
  • Only two choices of study are available within the School of Medicine.

ADMISSION

Pay attention to the following important information:

  • Higher Education South Africa (HESA) set specific admission requirements that you must meet if you want to study at any South African university. If you finished school in or after 2008, and have a National Senior Certificate (NSC), you need the following to apply for admission to a Bachelor’s Degree at any South African university:
    • Four (4) of the seven (7) subjects included in your NSC subject package, must be from the designated subject list.
    • Achieve a performance level of at least 4 (50%) in each of these four (4) subjects
  • All admission requirements apply to first year students in 2018.
  • Admission to study at the UFS is dependent on the following:
    • Your application meets all the minimum requirements for the programme
    • The programme must have available space and capacity to admit students
    • You have to submit valid school results with your application
  • The UFS reserves to right to change the minimum requirements of each programme without notifying you.
  • Applications for all non-selection programmes close on 29 September 2017.

An admission point (AP) consisting of seven levels is used. Points will be awarded for six academic modules.
Note: No points will be awarded for achievement levels lower than 30%:
