REMARKS

a.Admission requirement(s):

A basic NQF Level 6 bachelor’s degree or diploma in nursing from a South African university or nursing college. Registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse, employment in a clinical environment and at least one year of clinical experience after completion of the basic qualifications are required.

Holders of any other equivalent South African or international qualifications may also be considered, but will have to apply about six months in advance for the recognition of such qualifications. Candidates will be required to submit an evaluation of their qualifications by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) with their application forms for admission. The Faculty reserves the right to assess these qualifications and the applicant’s suitability/ competence for admission to the programme. Proof of English proficiency may be required. Depending on the nature of such an equivalent qualification, the completion of certain additional subjects may be required.

Selection is based on an assessment by a departmental selection panel.

c.Minimum duration:

One year.

d.Presentation:

Block-mode classes offered over a period of two years.

Evolution/History of occupational health both internationally and in South Africa, variables influencing occupatio- nal health, occupational health and labour relations legislation, occupational hygiene – occupational diseases and prevention thereof. Occupational safety – risk assessment and management. Occupational accidents and their management, protective devices, surveillance of the work environment, employee wellness, health promo- tion, psychosocial factors; vulnerable groups in workplaces and ergonomics. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH NURSING: THEORY IV (OCN40PT)1 X 3-HOUR PAPER

Occupational health nursing; principles, fundamentals and roles. Professional ethics (integrated with manage- ment). Assessment of the health status of clients, workplace assessments; pre-placement, periodic and exit examination, biological monitoring, chronic diseases screening. Diagnostic and treatment methods including history taking, physical examination, laboratory studies, treatment, counselling and referral. Pharmacology including; anti-effective drugs, antihistamines, CNS drugs, diuretics, anti-coagulants, analgesics, and respira- tory drugs. Application of scientific nursing within the family, group and community context. Employee assistant programme and occupational health training programme. (Total tuition time: ± 44 hours)

ONCOLOGY NURSING SCIENCE: PRACTICAL IV (ONS40QT)

CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT
