Northern Cape Urban College

HISTORY AND BACKGROUND
Background of Northern Cape Urban  College
There were 3 technical colleges in Kimberley, namely:
Moremogolo Technical College / Taemaneng Technical Centre
R C Elliott Technical College
Northern Cape Technical College
Since 1994, legislative frameworks and policies were put into place to deal with many of the challenges facing our society, including the transformation of the education system.
Subsequently, indications were given by the Northern Cape Department of Education that the three technical colleges should amalgamate. The first phase would incorporate the merging of the R C Elliott Technical College and the Moremogolo. Technical College into Kimberley College. The amalgamation of the 2 institutions was implemented as of January 1997.
The second phase of the amalgamation process was the merger of the newly formed Kimberley College (ex Moremogolo and RC Elliott) and the Northern Cape Technical College. This process was envisaged to be completed by January 1999.
The amalgamation became effective as of 1 April 2002. The College is now known as the Northern Cape Urban TVET College, and it operates on two campuses, namely the Northern Cape Technical College, now known as City Campus, and Moremogolo Campus, previously known as Moremogolo College.
The Northern Cape Urban TVET College is an accredited Service Provider via Umalusi. The College Quality Management System is ISO 9001:2008 certified. The College Health and Safety Management System was NOSA Four Star Graded in July 2012.
MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL At Northern Cape Urban College
The FET environment remains a challenging sector in which to be a role-player for the education of our youth. It is also a very vibrant environment which makes our significant contribution invaluable. Learner numbers have increased from 3555 in 2011, to 5371 in 2012, to 6827 in 2013. This very significant increase in numbers is due to the fact that the 50 FET Colleges countrywide continue to be the centre of the skills development landscape of South Africa.
Funding for the College continues to be provided by the Department of Higher Education and Training, NSFAS, SETA’s and funders of skills development projects. The funding assists students who cannot afford to pay for their own studies, however it does not meet the demand and the continuing increasing student numbers places our finances under extreme pressure.
The student certification rate of our students remains a challenge and our efforts are continually measured against improving this statistic. Wherever possible our resources are being channelled and re-directed to address strategies that will improve certification rate.
We have also been very successful in placing 162 learners at employers for internships and workplace experience and for that we thank the employers in our region and the staff that placed and trained these learners.
The College received a Golden Arrow Award from PMR.Africa (Professional Market Research) for Excellence 1st Overall in the Northern Cape East Regional survey.
I want to thank the College Council for their guidance and support during the year. I could always rely on their wise counsel. The important role of the SRC in liaising with students must not be underestimated and finally but very importantly I want to thank the staff who have committed their time and effort to being the catalyst for our youth to rise above their circumstances and take their rightful place in commerce, government or education in the development of our beautiful country.
We trust in God for guidance which will lead to greater success in the future.
Dr CF Barnes

Business Studies at Northern Cape Urban College

At Northern Cape Urban College (like this College) post-matriculation, theoretical training of 18 months duration is offered, after which a successful student will be in possession of the N4, N5 and N6 National Certificates. Should the student find employment in a field related to the theoretical training for 18 months, these 18 months are regarded as practical training. Proof of this practical training, together with proof of the 18 months theoretical training (copies of N4, N5 & N6 certificates), are then forwarded to the Department of Education by the College, requesting that a National Diploma be issued to the candidate.
This National Diploma is of the same standard and value as that of any diploma obtained by a student after 3 years of study anywhere. The advantage of obtaining a diploma in this manner is that thousands of rands are saved and, after 18 months, the student has hands-on experience of what is expected of an employer in that field. This diploma is presented to the student at a prestigious award ceremony held annually by the College in May.

Selection and Placement
Testing
The CAP Placement Test used by Northern Cape Urban TVET College is a selection mechanism that may be used as part of the admissions process. Changes to admission requirements must be approved by the Career Guidance Counselor. The Placement Test determines the course in which the student is most interested in and suited to.
The CAP Placement Test measures potential students to succeed in the programme applied for. The result is then considered for admission or correct registration for programmes. The test battery focuses on numerical and reading comprehension. Results are then provided to each department to include in decision-making along with data on Grade 11/12 results and required subjects.
The CAP Placement Test is an online application and every new NC(V) student that applies to the College must write the placement test in order to be registered for a course.

-WORK BASED EXPERIENCE AND JOB PLACEMENT
A lack of workplace knowledge and experience is a huge stumbling block for graduates entering the world of work. It limits their ability to access work and their ability to cope in a work environment. The Minister of Higher Education and Training reconfirmed the role of TVET colleges in providing work experience for students and graduates to bridge their entry into the world of work.
“We now know that college training is, on its own, not enough. If workplace learning does not complement the learning done at colleges, we could well find that the youngsters we work so hard to train remain unemployed after they qualified.” (Address made by Blade Nzimande on 23 February 2010)
  • WORK BASED EXPERIENCE AIMS TO:
Our vision is the attainment by our students of the knowledge and skills required by prospective employers through workplace-based experience.
Workplace-Based Experience plays an essential role in preparing students for employability.
It provides students with an understanding of the nature of the workplaces in their chosen field of training and builds their capacity to apply their college learning in the context of real workplace operations.
It provides workplace-relevant social and communication skills, which enable students to effectively work in teams and engage with customers.
It is also a key ingredient in graduates being able to start and succeed in their own business ventures.
On a daily basis South African employers are confronted with a shortage of adequately qualified and experienced staff. Students at Further Education and Training colleges are a good future source of such staff. We urge you to grant them an opportunity, at no cost to your company, by offering them a short period of work experience to develop their skills.
  • We wish to place students who are registered for National Curriculum (Vocational) and other college programmes with employers for periods of workplace-based experience (WBE). Our goal is to place students for five consecutive days per year of study. During these placements, employers are asked to orientate students to their companies and allow them to work alongside employees.
For many young people, obtaining this kind of work experience has been life-transforming. They have developed a better understanding of their chosen career and how it is practised in the workplace. This has motivated them to work harder and succeed. Many students have forged relationships with employers that led to immediate offers of employment after graduation.
We are looking for companies who are willing to host some of our students who are being trained in Business , and Engineering studies. We hope to place them for 5 days during the March 2012 (30 March – 10 April)  and June 2012 (22 June – 16 July) school holidays.
The Company is not obliged to offer any stipends / remuneration to students. The only cost to the company is the notional one of supervising the students during their time of placement.
COMMENTS FROM STUDENTS WHO HAVE RECEIVED WORKPLACE-BASED EXPERIENCE
The work placement helped me to understand completely because everything they teach me, they also let me do it practically to understand better by doing it.”
“I now have a clear understanding of the course I have chosen.”
“It gave me an idea of what employers are looking for and what they expect”.
“The experience was extremely useful – I learned not only what it is to work, but also what my life could be”.
“It has helped with my practical skills a lot because I worked daily on a particular machine. I also worked with experienced people who gave me a few tips.”
I learned that the company is not a playground. I could die if I did not follow the safety rules.
