ABOUT US

The School of ICT consists of two Departments, namely Information Technology and Applied Informatics.

These departments collectively offer an extensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the computing discipline of Information Technology, which is endorsed by the Higher Education Information and Communication Technology Association (HEICTA).

The vision of the School is to be the leading provider of state of the art Information and Communication Technology expertise in South Africa. The undergraduate programmes are designed to give students an adequate grounding in the fundamental principles underlying their chosen field of study, while at the same time emphasizing the practical and applied nature of the subject matter.



A significant portion of the tuition time is spent in our modern, well-equipped computer laboratories. Students are prepared for an interesting and rewarding career.

At postgraduate level, students can specialise in various research focus areas including Information Security Management and Governance, Health Informatics, Usability and User Experience and Mobile and Workflow. The Institute of ICT Advancement (IICTA), which forms part of the School, leads the School’s postgraduate research programmes in these areas. Many students have acquired postgraduate degrees under the auspices of the School of ICT and IICTA and have acquired sought-after positions in industry.

CISCO CERTIFIED NETWORKING ASSOCIATE (CCNA)

COURSE: CCNA MODULES 1-4

The course will be offered part-time over 32 weeks (March to November).

(Two four-hour sessions per week)

The course will start in March and run through to November.

Class is usually on a Monday and Wednesday nights from 17:00 until 21:00

 

CCNA EXPLORATION COURSE DESCRIPTION

Students who complete CCNA 1: Network Fundamentals will be able to perform basic networking tasks including, but not limited to:

 

  • Explain the importance of data networks and the Internet in supporting business communications and everyday activities and explain how communication works in data networks.
  • Recognize the devices and services that are used to support communications across an Internetwork and use network protocol models to explain the layers of communications in data networks.
  • Describe the protocols and services provided by the application layer in the OSI and TCP/IP models and describe how this layer operates in various networks. Analyze the operations and features of transport and network layer protocols and services and explain the fundamental concepts of routing.
  • Design, calculate, and apply subnet masks and addresses to fulfill given requirements.
  • Explain fundamental Ethernet concepts such as media, services, and operation and build a simple
  • Ethernet network using routers and switches. Employ basic cabling and network designs to connect devices in accordance with stated objectives and use Cisco command-line interface (CLI) commands to perform basic router and switch configuration and verification.

Students who complete CCNA 2: Routing Protocols and Concepts will be able to perform various routing tasks including, but not limited to:

 

  • Explain the critical role routers play in enabling communications across multiple networks.
  • Describe the purpose and nature of routing tables and explain the route lookup process and
  • determine the path packets will take in a network, as well as describe the purpose of static routes
  • and the procedure for configuring them. Describe the role of dynamic routing protocols and
  • place these protocols in the context of modern network design and identify the metric types used
  • by dynamic routing protocols. Compare and contrast classful and classless IP addressing and
  • describe classful and classless routing behaviors in routed networks. Configure routing protocols
  • such as RIP, EIGRP and OSPF. Use router show and debug commands to troubleshoot common
  • errors that occur in small routed networks

Students who complete CCNA 3: LAN Switching and Wireless will be able to perform various switching and wireless tasks including, but not limited to:

 

  • Identify and correct common network problems at layers 1, 2, 3, and 7 using a layered model approach.
  • Explain basic switching concepts and the operation of Cisco switches and perform and verify initial switch configuration tasks including remote access management. Describe, configure and troubleshoot enhanced switching technologies such as VLANs, VLAN Trunking, Protocol (VTP), Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP), Per VLAN Spanning Tree Protocol (PVSTP), and 802.1q. Verify network status and switch operation using basic utilities such as ping, traceroute, Telnet, SSH, ARP, and ipconfig, as well as the show and debug commands.
  • Manage Cisco IOS configuration files (save, edit, upgrade, and restore).
  • Describe standards associated with wireless media, such as IEEE WI-FI Alliance and ITU/FCC, as well as identify and describe the purpose of the components in a small wireless network, such as Service Set
  • Identification (SSID), Basic Service Set (BSS), and Extended Service Set (ESS). Compare and contrast Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) security features and capabilities of open, Wired
  • Equivalent Privacy (WEP), and WPA-1/2 networks

Students who complete CCNA 4: Accessing the WAN will be able to perform various WAN-related tasks including, but not limited to:

  • Describe the impact of Voice Over IP and Video Over IP applications on a network and describe the components required for network and Internet communications. Implement basic switch security measures such as port security, trunk access, and management VLANs and configure, verify, and troubleshoot DHCP and DNS operations on a router.
  • Describe the purpose and types of ACLs, as well as configure and apply ACLs based on network filtering requirements.
  • Configure NAT for given network requirements using SDM/CLI and troubleshoot NAT issues.
  • Configure and verify basic WAN serial, PPP and Frame-Relay connections and troubleshoot WAN implementation issues.
  • Describe the importance, benefits, role, impact, and components of VPN technology.

COST

CCNA Module 1-4                R4600 per module (there are 4 modules)

Module fees include all course materials, textbooks and handouts.

Total cost for the four modules are R18400.

 

PAYMENT OPTIONS

First Option:

Total Cost = R18400

– (10% discount applies if this payment option is used (R18400 x 10%= R16560)

– A 60% deposit of the discount course fee R16560 has to be paid by no later than 25 February 2013. The balance must be paid by 30 April 2013.

 

Second Option:

 

– Payment of R4600 per module before commencement of each module.

 

Note: Most major credit cards are acceptable for payment.

CANCELLATION OF COURSE

Should a student cancel the course and request a refund, a written letter is required from the student or the company who have made the payment. A 10% cancellation fee will be deducted and the refund will be paid within 30 days.

DURATION

Course commences in March and ends November of each year. Classes take place twice a week (Monday and Wednesday) from 17h00 at NMMU Summerstrand North Campus.

Time is allocated for the classes from 17:00 – 21:00.  Class is open from 17:00 for the students to write exams, do practical etc.  Classes start with theory at 17:30 and then continue with theory and practical until around 21:00.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS WANTING TO ENROLL

Please note that students are responsible to arrange their own accommodation, bursaries, Visas or study permits.

INTERNATIONAL EXAMS

The international exams can be booked through the NMMU – Pearson Vue Testing Centre. Costs of the exams are for the student’s own account as it is not included in the CCNA Course fees.



CERTIFICATION

A course completion certificate will be issued upon successful completion of each module. Students are strongly encouraged to also write the CCNA Prometric/VUE Examination at a testing centre on completion of the last module to obtain the CCNA certificate. (The cost of this examination will be for the student’s own account).

NQF LEVELS/ACCREDITATION FROM SAQA

As a public higher education institution, the NMMU is accredited by the Higher Education Quality Committee of the Council on Higher Education.

The CCNA and CCNP courses are aligned with career / vocational certifications and are therefore not registered with SAQA. Cisco offers five levels of general IT certification: Entry, Associate, Professional, Expert and Architect. The CCNA and CCNP courses are pitched at the Associate and Professional levels within the Cisco Career Certification program. Various tracks—such as Routing and Switching, Network Security, and Service Provider—are available, so that the certification path can be matched to the job role in industry.

PREREQUISITES

Candidates should be computer literate (Microsoft Windows Desktop operating system – Windows XP recommended) and familiar with Internet usage. Previous basic computer & networking experience would serve as a recommendation.

CISCO CERTIFIED NETWORKING PROFESSIONAL (CCNP)

COURSE

CCNP modules 1-3

The course will be offered part-time over 1 year. (Two four-hour sessions per week with an additional monthly Saturday morning session as needed).

The course will start in February and run through to November.

Class is usually on a Tuesday and Thursday night from 17:00 until 21:00

CCNP COURSE DESCRIPTION

Prerequisites for CCNP: Cisco Certified Networking Associate (CCNA) knowledge

CCNP: Building Scalable Internetworks

Introduces Cisco Networking Academy Program students to scalable IP networks. Students will learn how to create an efficient and expandable enterprise network by installing, configuring, monitoring, and troubleshooting network infrastructure equipment (especially routers such as Cisco ISRs) according to the Campus Infrastructure module in the Enterprise Composite Network model. Advanced topics include, but are not limited to, how to configure EIGRP, multi-area OSPF, IS-IS, and BGP routing protocols and how to manipulate and optimize routing updates between these routing protocols, as well as routing protocol authentication. Other topics include multicast routing, IPv6 configuration.

CCNP: Implementing Secure Converged Wide-area Networks

Introduces Cisco Networking Academy Program students to providing secure enterprise-class network service for teleworkers and branch sites. Students will learn how to secure and expand the reach of an enterprise network with focus on VPN configuration and securing network access. Topics include, but are not limited to, teleworker configuration and access, frame-mode MPLS, site-to-site IPSEC VPN, Cisco EZVPN, strategies used to mitigate network attacks. Implementation of Cisco Device Hardening and IOS firewall features, as well as describing and configuring Cisco Intrusion Protection Services (IPS).

CCNP: Building Multilayer Switched Networks

Teaches students about the deployment of state-of-the-art campus LANs. The course focuses on the selection and implementation of the appropriate Cisco IOS services to build reliable, scalable multilayer-switched LANs. Students will be able to describe how VLAN configuration of switches in a single management domain can be automated with the Cisco proprietary VTP, as well as implement high availability technologies and techniques using multilayer switches in a campus environment. Students will understand Wireless LANs and will be able to describe and configure switch infrastructure to support voice, as well as describe and implement security features in a switched network

CCNP: Optimizing Converged Networks

Introduces Cisco Networking Academy Program students to optimizing and providing effective Quality of Service (QoS) techniques in converged networks operating voice, wireless and security applications. Students will develop knowledge of networking for the small-office, homeoffice (SOHO) market and enterprise markets. Topics include implementing a VoIP network, implementing QoS on converged networks, specific IP QoS mechanisms for implementing the DiffServ QoS model, AutoQoS, wireless security and basic wireless management.

COST

CCNP Module 1-3 R8520 per module

Module fees include all course materials, textbooks and handouts.

A non-refundable deposit of R 3000 + VAT per student will be payable upon the successful application by no later than 30 January 2012. This amount will be offset against the fees of the first CCNP module.

First Option:

– A 60% deposit of the course fee has to be paid before commencement of the course. The balance of must be paid by 28 February 2012.
