Monash South Africa students visit Nampak Tissue Mill

Monash South Africa Foundation Programme students studying Geography and Environmental Science were fortunate enough to visit the Nampak Tissue Mill in Kliprivier. The site visit was arranged as part of the Service Learning project that is run as part of the Geography and Environmental Science unit. Service Learning requires that students deal with a specific issue on the Monash South Africa campus. This semester the project focused on waste paper management and recycling on the campus. Students are required to carry out audits across the campus to determine how much waste paper is generated during a semester, and to determine whether recycling is a viable option for the campus.

The visit to the Nampak Mill (arranged through PURCO SA) proved invaluable as students were able to witness first hand what becomes of paper that has been recycled. The staff at Nampak were insightful and incredibly helpful. They answered all of the questions that were put their way. The mill is run effectively and it was incredible to see how quickly the process takes place. The end result was astounding: giant rolls of soft tissue paper ready to be turned into paper products. The students all left feeling inspired and motivated to start recycling and to encourage others to do the same. The trip was hugely successful and the information gathered was important for the completion of the Service Learning project.

Roselle Sherriff of Monash had this to report: “The tour of the mill was incredible. The staff at Nampak were friendly and eager to answer questions that the students had. It was a very informative day that left us all excited about our project on campus. It was interesting to see what becomes of our paper waste if we all recycle it. We were able to take a few photographs that I can send through if you like.”
