Mangosuthu University of Technology Mechanical Engineering

VISION

To produce a high quality, advanced instructional programme in the field of Mechanical Engineering, which produces competent graduates who can meet the needs of the community as well as the local, regional and national industry.

MISSION

This will be achieved by:

  • The continuous improvement of our staff qualifications and expertise in order to deliver the highest quality teaching, learning and research
  • Marketing the department effectively both locally and nationally in order to attract quality students
  • Promoting research projects in collaboration with the industry in order to advance our academic endeavours and to uplift the community
  • Engaging in community related projects regularly in order to enhance the quality of life of both the individual and society.

PURPOSE OF THE COURSE

The National Diploma: Engineering: Mechanical, is designed in order for our graduates to be able to apply analytical and practical engineering techniques and knowledge to conduct operations and solve problems. These will include industrial, social and environmental problems in the mechanical engineering working environment in the areas of design, manufacturing, maintenance and management.

CRITERIA FOR SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE

Our graduates will be able to:

  • Identify, analyse and produce solutions to those problems related to mechanical engineering as presented in the classroom and in the laboratory as examples and practicals, as well as those problems encountered in a real-life context as part of Work Integrated Learning
  • Apply analytical and practical techniques and the knowledge related to the specific disciplines of Mechanical Engineering Design. This includes Mechanics and Strength of Materials as applied to Engineering Design, Thermodynamics as applied to Steam Plants and Fluid Mechanics as applied to Hydraulic Machines
  • Conduct engineering operations and apply their practical skills gained through laboratory practicals, specific skills, training, projects and experience during Work Integrated Learning to address challenges in the real-life working environment
  • Communicate in a professional manner, using the language, concepts, models, techniques and equipment encountered in the engineering working environment
  • Apply mathematical techniques and interpret the results of mathematical calculations to assist in the solving of engineering problems
  • Use basic scientific and technological principles in an applied engineering context
  • Analyse the overall functioning and purpose of a particular organisation
  • Organise their personal workflow or that of others within their organisation
  • Work as part of a team or independently as required by the work environment
  • Work ethically, safely and responsibly, taking due consideration for the environment and their fellow human beings
