PURPOSE OF THE COURSEAt its core, Environmental Health is concerned with the health and well-being of people and other living things. This field of study does this by addressing elements of health and safety and assessing various physical, chemical and biological factors in the surrounding environment for their potential negative effects. The profession aims to prevent diseases and create healthy and aesthetically acceptable environments for people, by identifying, evaluating and controlling potential health risks in the surrounding environment.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Grade 12 with the following subjects and grades

DURATION OF STUDY

The minimum duration of study is three years. When registering, all students are required to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as student Environmental Health Practitioners. This once-off registration is valid for the entire duration of study.



Upon completion of the formal training programme, students will be placed by the Department of Health in compulsory community service. This must be completed before one is allowed to register as an Independent Environmental Health Practitioner with the HPCSA.

PASSS REQUIREMENTS

A 50% pass mark is required in all subjects. In addition, some courses have a practical component, the requirements of which must also be met.

PRACTICAL

To successfully complete some of the subjects in this course, students must demonstrate an acceptable level of proficiency with equipment and laboratory instruments.

WORK INTEGRATED LEARNING

To qualify for the National Diploma: Environmental Health, students must complete a minimum of 100 days of Work Integrated Learning, which will be outlined in the first year of study. The department does offer assistance with this requirement, but it is up to students to ensure they attend activities and arranged placements.
