George Whitefield College Library

George Whitefield College Library

In many respects the Library is at the heart of George Whitefield College. The Broughton Knox Library houses a wonderful collection of theology, biblical studies, history, philosophy, missiology and much more. Great effort has gone into collecting original sources and tools for studying the Christian Faith. Beyond its usefulness for undergraduate study and postgraduate research the library is a precious depository of Christian culture. In addition to its books the library is connected to a vast store of other materials through its electronic facilities.

The library presently holds more than 50,000 books and a plan is underway to double this and bring it to PhD standard.

Serious reading is vital to the study of theology. All courses at the College have lists of required and recommended reading, making the Library a vital part of the life of every student. Students can also access much of the recommended reading via the library intranet and the college’s e-learning platform, affectionately known as Phoebe.

E-learning is increasingly a feature of the GWC learning culture. The central campus (including Foord House Residence) is covered by WiFi, and students with their own laptop or desktop computer can easily access the internet, intranet and Phoebe.

A computer laboratory is located in the Study Centre, so that no student is without computer access. A course in computing and information processing is provided in the first year of study.

The College is in the process of building a comprehensive set of electronic resources that will enable students and researchers to access the information they need. Internet access via an ADSL connection is available to students in the computer lab at a small fee.

Electronic resources available from the computer lab include BibleWorks, Libronix and all the required course readings. Postgraduate students registered through NWU also have access to numerous online resources that they subscribe to, such as ATLA.
