Cape Peninsula University of Technology CPUT Environmental Health
The Department of Environmental and Occupational Studies has two programmes, namely Environmental Health and Environmental Management. We offer the following qualifications: Diploma, BTech, MTech (coursework and dissertation), and DTech.
Environmental Health graduates are employed by Municipalities, Department of National Health, Department of Labour, Department of Water Affairs, Department of Environmental Affairs, Department of Agriculture and various private enterprises such as consulting engineers. Environmental Health Practitioners mainly work outdoors. They are responsible for the following:
- Housing in newly-built, existing and slum areas (by enforcing building and town planning legislation).
- Handling and preparation of food (by enforcing food and milk legislation).
- Supply of clean potable water (by enforcing water legislation).
- Air pollution (by enforcing air quality legislation).
- Water pollution (by enforcing water legislation).
- Soil pollution (by enforcing environmental legislation).
- Waste disposal (by enforcing waste legislation).
- Protection of worker’s health and well-being in industry (by enforcing occupational health and safety legislation).
- Control of communicable diseases (by enforcing the Health Act).
- Meat inspection (by enforcing meat and abattoir legislation).
- Health education.
- Community development (by enforcing government policies).
- Management (by enforcing the Municipal Systems Act, as well as the Municipal Finance Act).
Environmental Management students are equipped to manage environmental aspects such as water demand, energy and transport impacts, environmental impacts assessments and environmental policies.
Employment Opportunities exists in government departments such as the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Water Affairs and Forestry. City Municipalities Industry and consulting companies also seek experienced graduates. Our graduates are employed as, amongst others, Environmental Law Consultants, Environmental Impact Assessment Specialists and Environmental Auditors.
Both programmes have a Work-In-Learning service component which exposes students to the workplace by placement with companies and institutions. This provides valuable work experience which strengthens the value of the qualification of our students.
