About University of Johannesburg UJ Metropolitan Academy

Metropolitan Raucall is a GDE high school supported by UJ and Metropolitan Life. The school was established in 1992 by the then Rand Afrikaans University in an effort to help learners from schools in the townships. Pupils were selected on the basis of their aptitude for mathematics and science.  Since 1994 Metropolitan has joined hands with RAU in this project and is still involved today. The focus of the school curriculum package has remained the same. The selection criteria have however become less exclusive.

Currenly there are just over 500 pupils in the school, with just under 100 matriculants this year. Since our first matric group in 1996, we have had a 100% pass rate every year with an average of 80% of pupils qualifying with university exemption.

The FET phase has a set curriculum of seven subjects: English Home Language, Afrikaans First Additional Language, Mathematics, Science, Accounting, Economics and Life Orientation. The aim of this curriculum is to prepare the youth in the school for tertiary study and professional careers in these fields.

The success of the school can be attributed to various factors. Our sponsors as well as the education department provide a lot of support. The teachers are dedicated, hard working and knowledgeable in their respective fields. The school governing body is involved in all matters related to the school. The majority of parents give their full co-operation. The pupils are well-disciplined and focused on their academic achievements.

In addition to the academic programme, RAUCALL also offers a variety of co-curricular activities. One of these is the school choir which performs regularly in local competitions and public event such. Pupils also take part in a variety of Olympiads and other competitions. There are also opportunities to take part in debating, chess and play productions. Various outings are arranged during the course of the year.

Metropolitan entered the school in the Stevie Award for the Best Corporate Social Responsibility Programme, which was an international competition. They won the prize for Africa and Asia. The prize giving ceremony was held during September in Ireland in 2008.

The school was among the top ten public schools in the country according to a Sunday Times survey during October 2009. The school was also the top achiever in mathematics and was rated fourth in science.
