ABOUT THE COMPANY – SHOPRITE
In 1979, the Shoprite Group was founded in a small town in South Africa by the acquisition of 8 Cape Town-based supermarkets. Today, Shoprite operates more than 270 stores across 16 countries in Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands.
The company also owns almost 2000 corporate stores such as Checkers, Checkers Hyper, Checkers Liquor, Checkers MediRite, OK Furniture, OK Express, House & Home, Hungry Lion, Shoprite Liquor, Shoprite MediRite and Usave.
Apart from the corporate stores, The Shoprite Group also own 367 franchise brands stores across South Africa and Namibia, including: Friendly Stores, Friendly Liquor, Megasave, OK Foods, OK Minimark, OK Grocer, OK Value, Sentra and Enjoy.
ABOUT THE BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED
The Shoprite Group will be awarding bursaries within the following fields of study:
- Accounting (CA Stream – SAICA): 10 positions available for 2nd and 3rd year students
- Data Engineering: 5 positions available
- Information Technology: 10 positions available
- Data Science: 10 positions available
- Pharmacy: 5 positions available
- Retail Business Management: 60 positions available
MORE ABOUT THE BURSARY PROGRAMME – COVERAGE VALUE & SERVICE CONTRACT
The bursary ranges from R30 000 to R60 000, depending on the course of study and institution. They aim to cover tuition fees, prescribed books and an allowance for accommodation.
Please note that there is a mandatory work-back requirement – for every year that you are covered by the bursary programme, you will work at Shoprite for the equal amount of time.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
Accounting (CA Stream) students:
- South African citizen
- Not older than 27 years old
- Completed Matric
- Studying towards a BCom Accounting, BAcc (CA stream) qualification
- In your 2nd or 3rd year of study
- Achieved a minimum overall average of 65%
Data Engineering students:
- South African citizen
- Not older than 27 years old
- Completed Matric
- Studying towards a BSc Data Engineering qualification
- Achieved a minimum overall average of 60%
- Achieved a minimum result of 60% for Mathematics
Information Technology students:
- South African citizen
- Not older than 27 years old
- Completed Matric
- Studying towards a National Diploma: Information Technology or Information Systems, BSc or BCom with an Information Systems major, Business and Systems Analysis (BASA programme) qualification
- In your 2nd to 4th year of study
Data Science students:
- South African citizen
- Not older than 27 years old
- Completed Matric
- Studying towards an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Operational Research, Quantitative Management (or similar quantitative degree), Computer Science, Industrial Engineering qualification
- In your 2nd to 4th year of study
- Achieved a minimum result of 65% for Mathematics
- Passionate about data and would like to work for the data academy in the future
Pharmacy students:
- South African citizen
- Not older than 27 years old
- Completed Matric
- Studying towards a BPharm Degree qualification
- In your 1st year of study
- Passionate about Health Care in the Retail Industry
Retail Business Management students:
- South African citizen
- Not older than 27 years old
- Completed Matric
- Studying towards a Retail Business Management: National or Advanced Diploma qualification
- In your 2nd to 4th year of study
- Achieved a minimum overall average of 60%
