Bosasa Youth Development Centres

Bosasa Youth Development Centres

Bosasa Youth Development Centres have operated in South Africa since 1995 when our first centre, The Mogale Youth Care Facility, was opened just outside Krugersdorp in Gauteng. Since then we have established a further 11 centres across the country. These range in capacity but not in the standards of worth and rehabilitation that they offer. We provide the same high quality of infrastructure and facilities to every child – in every facility. Bosasa Child and Youth Care Centres are guided by South African legislation as well as international trends and guidelines. We incorporate a multitude of disciplines and national policies into our internal processes and procedures. This is done to assure that each child who passes through our doors receives the best possible care and assistance to obtain their future goals and become valuable assets within their communities.

At Bosasa Youth Development Centres we do not only strive for excellence but believe that to achieve it you need to have solid foundations. Therefore we have a three-pronged approach to the operation of our centres. Firstly there is a strict set of guiding principles and values, secondly our Code of Conduct and thirdly our Code of Ethics.

HISTORY

In June 1995, the BOSASA Youth Development Centres (YDC) were established in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Social Development. During this time, the government recognised the need for children in conflict with the law to be relocated from adult-occupied correctional facilities and cells to safer environments. This not only triggered a transformation within South Africa and the Child and Youth Care System, but also the beginning of the BOSASA Youth Development history.

At BOSASA, our desire to deliver excellent service and to give back to the local communities directed us in developing an effective strategy. It focused on the need for improved quality in the care services rendered to children in facilities and resulted in the successful implementation of Youth Care Centres nationwide. All of these Centres are responsible for providing care for children ages 14 and 17. In the case where a child is under the age of 14 years, the incident is referred to our Youth Centres. This child may then be granted a special arrangement to accommodate them.

Bosasa Youth Development Centres Accreditation

Accreditation and BBBEE

Life-changing transformations are the heart of Bosasa’s business, and our goal is to instil a sense of pride and purpose within South Africans, equipping them with the skills they need to lead positive, productive lives. This is especially true when it comes to our outreach initiatives around the country.

Our accreditation, across all of our juvenile offender programmes and young offenders’ centres, is of the highest standard. These holistic initiatives are recognised and accredited by respected regulatory bodies, which guarantee that the utmost standards in educational excellence are met and professional services delivered. Furthermore, Bosasa is a proud achiever among BBBEE contributors in the economic and social development sectors of South Africa.

Bosasa Youth Centres Accreditation

Our mission is to allow previously disadvantaged youth to receive certified qualifications that will enable them to further develop their skills. In doing so, they are empowered to overcome the obstacles of their past; reaching beyond the possibilities dictated by their circumstances. It is only through meaningful and legitimate education that these South Africans will be able to rewrite their histories, building on their positive personal attributes. We are proud to be a part of a future in which South Africans are able to better not only their own lives, but also contribute to the economic growth of our country.Bosasa’s facilities are registered with the Department of Education and accredited by organisations that ensure the highest quality standards, such as Umalusi: the Council for General and Further Education and Training.

Bosasa’s juvenile programmes have also been developed according to the guidelines and regulations of relevant Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs). This ensures that educational qualifications are valuable, credible and nationally recognised.

By providing a curriculum that is aligned with the principles of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF), we can ensure not only genuine qualifications, but an internationally comparable level of education and training. Finally, in addition to contributing to the personal career development of the individuals involved, working within the NQF’s structure allows us to train individuals in several occupations. This allows them to contribute meaningfully to the social and economic development of South Africa as a whole.

Bosasa’s BBBEE Status

Transformation, development and education go hand in hand with the principles of Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE). Accordingly, Bosasa is proud to have achieved an ABVA-verified, Level Three BBBEE status. In keeping with our dedication to social development, Bosasa’s BBBEE procurement principles focus specifically on contributing to the SMME and skills development sectors.

Our BBBEE contributions are only a single facet of Bosasa’s ethos of holistic transformation, which emphasises a consistent dedication to training and development through mentorship and service excellence. This superiority is also the result of recognised accreditation by Umalusi, as well as the SETA and NQF aligned programmes. These certifications support professional caregivers in going beyond education to facilitate the transformation of vulnerable youth, who are the foundation of our nation’s future.

 HOLISTIC DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY

  1. Education
  2. Personal Development
  3. Therapeutic Intervention
  4. Cultural activities
  5. Entrepreneurial Development
  6. Sport and recreation
  7. Reintegration back into society

When participating in the programme, children are encouraged to form relationships that are meaningful, stimulate a positive self-image, increase their intellectual ability and encourage a sense of social responsibility. Ultimately the main purpose of this strategy is to successfully reintegrate the child into society smoothly and without any problems.

THE SERVICES PROVIDED BY THE BOSASA YOUTH DEVELOPMENT CENTRES ARE:

  • Developmental in nature: among other things we focus on their strengths, we build up competencies within each child, encourage trial and error learning as a method to grow and widen their knowledge levels, as well as foster a strong belief of potential within not only the child but the whole family system.
  • Restorative and rehabilitative: we encourage children who have come into conflict with the law to make amends with their past actions, and focus on putting right their wrongs, rather than handing down punishment.
  • Programmes are therapeutic in nature: by introducing a social worker, psychologist or occupational therapist in the process, we give the children an opportunity to talk about their problems. This can be restorative, rehabilitative and improve their social functioning abilities for when they are reintroduced into society.
  • Programmes restore dignity: a high level of respect is always shown for each child’s well-being and emphasis is placed on building their dignity. When interventions are done, we ensure that they are of a kind and nurturing nature, avoiding any kind of physical, emotional or social harm to the child.
  • Multi-disciplinary approach to programmes: we make use of a multi-disciplinary approach, as it assists when examining other treatment options (therapy, counselling) rendering a positive service and when evaluating each child in a holistic manner.
  • Providing children with alternatives rather than condeming them to a life of crime we give them a second chance. Through our programmes we ensure that the youth of today will be responsible, educated and capable leaders, resulting in a better tomorrow for us all.
